Spain beckons us
with its promise of glorious, safe, sandy, sunlit beaches. Since the
1960's, millions of British people have taken a Spanish holiday on cheap
package deals.
More recently, the Spaniards have been trying to attract a different sort of
clientele to the usual groups of lager louts and young men and women
hunting for the three S's, sea, sun and sex. Complexes are
being built with young families in mind, and more luxury villas and
apartments for older, wealthier, middle class people who want to play
tennis and golf on their Spanish holiday.
On a recent Spanish holiday, my husband and I were shocked to see the
enormous amount of building work going on. If they develop much further,
there won't be any hill sides left in some areas. It's becoming almost impossible
to take photographs without a crane or half completed building somewhere
on the horizon.
For me, there are two types of Spanish holiday, and they might as well
be on different planets. In the popular coastal regions, everything is
geared up for the British holiday maker. Brits can drink British beer in
British theme pubs, follow their favourite soap operas, watch football
matches from the English Premiership on the pub telly, and eat traditional
fish and chips in the cafes. The only attempt to engage with Spanish
culture is to eat a giant plateful of paella or go to a bull ring.
The other type of Spanish holiday is the one that I can recommend. This the real Spain, the Spain that
is not ashamed to
be Spanish and where each region proudly shows off its own particular
culture.
Madrid, the capital city is a good place to start for a great Spanish holiday.
It's a modern city with a fascinating past and some of the best museums
in Europe. Catalonia in the north-east has its own
distinct identity and language. Its jewel in the crown is Barcelona, where the feted
architect Antoni Gaudi designed his wonderfully, eccentric buildings.
The artist Salvador Dali has a superb museum
dedicated to him in his hometown of Figueres.
Andalusia is another fascinating destination for a touring Spanish
holiday. In the south-west of the country, the legacy of the Arabs who
conquered the region is everywhere, leaving behind beautiful Islamic
palaces and castles . The towns of Seville, Cordoba and Granada are
enchanting.
Spain is a truly amazing country, especially when you travel inland and start to
explore. A Spanish holiday has its modern attractions too, with
excellent shopping, restaurants and bars. Football is a passion there, and
fans of the sport will enjoy a tour of the Nou Stadium, where
Barcelona play. There is a museum there that shows the history of
the club. It's the culture of the country that keeps drawing me back.
In addition to Dali, Spain also produced other great artists including Goya, Picasso and Miro. A
holiday in Spain will leave many memories of beautiful towns, villages,
cathedrals, churches and palaces.
The local food is pretty good too. I don't want to eat English food
when I go there. I don't want to drink in English pubs. I don't want the
Spaniards to make me feel at home. I want to
feel that I am in Spain! Otherwise, why did I go to Spain for a holiday?
